NSCN Member Success Story: Bonnie

"Where I work now, they usually don’t hire anyone unless they are referred by a current employee.”

Bonnie learned about the New Start Career Network (NSCN) through the New Jersey Department of Labor and decided to join. Bonnie credits NSCN with providing support and helpful information throughout her job search.

Prior to becoming unemployed, Bonnie worked as a Principal Scientist at a large biotech company. She was unemployed for 9 years before starting her new position. The most challenging part of her job search was “not getting discouraged.”

Bonnie recently landed a new job as a staff engineer at a large multinational conglomerate. She stated that networking was a major factor in landing her new job. She “met the hiring manager at a local restaurant and told him I was looking for a job.”

As Bonnie returns to work, she offers this advice to other individuals who are searching for work:
  • Network, network, network. Where I work now, they usually don’t hire anyone unless they are referred by a current employee.
  • You must reach out to a person to secure the job.
  • Get over being 45 or over and stop using it as an excuse. There are places that will value your years of experience.
  • Read the Rod Colon book Win the Race for 21st Century Jobs
