NSCN Member Success Story: Michael

Learn how support from NSCN, redoing his resume with help from an HR professional and replacing his AOL account with a Gmail account helped Michael land a new job!

Michael’s job history includes positions as a property manager and a collection manager.   After hearing about the New Start Career Network (NSCN) by attending an event in New Brunswick, Michael became a member.  He has found the events and support offered by NSCN to be the most helpful.

Michael was unemployed for two years before landing his new position as accounts receivable collections specialist. He credits his new job to a combination of factors: NSCN support, dedicated time on the computer, replacing his AOL account with a Gmail account, and redoing his resume with input from a knowledgeable HR professional who helped make it more ATS-compliant.

Michael shares that the most challenging part of his job search was “beginning to realize that the older you are the more difficult it is to get a job.”  He states that, “Maria told me to have the faith and always have a smile and sooner or later something will come along. I have been offered a few full time jobs but was looking for a part time. This job is 11 minutes from my home and you can come to work dressing casually. The office only has 5 employees but has been in business for over 16 years and they have 2 operations in China.”

As Michael returns to work, he offers this advice to other NSCN members who are searching for work: “Get the resume updated and make sure it is done by someone who knows what is needed and would pass the ATS system. If you get through the front door you will have a great chance to get the job.”
