Become a Volunteer Career Coach

The New Start Career Network and New Jersey’s long-term unemployed workers need your help!

volunteer.jpgThe New Start Career Network is seeking volunteer career coaches and professionals with backgrounds in career counseling, recruiting, executive search, human resources, and related fields. We are looking for qualified and dedicated career coaches and other career professionals who are willing to donate their services and expertise to helping New Jersey’s long-term unemployed job seekers.

The Commitment:

NSCN asks that interested individuals donate 2-4 hours per week over a minimum of a 6-month period to helping coach one or more NSCN members.

We also ask that our volunteer job coaches be willing to complete brief questionnaires and to participate in periodic NSCN meetings with other NSCN coaches to exchange information on their experiences helping job seekers.

By joining us, you become an important part of a statewide, Rutgers University-based team dedicated to reducing long-term unemployment in New Jersey. Your efforts will also contribute to a better understanding of strategies that are effective in serving job seekers and help develop policies in New Jersey that can serve as a model for the nation. Please note that all information NSCN collects regarding job coaches and NSCN member job seekers will remain confidential and that we will not share information that would identify our volunteers or members.

To Join Our Network of Volunteer Job Coaches:

To become a certified NSCN Volunteer Job Coach, we ask that you complete a 1-day (6-hour) preliminary orientation and training session led by the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and the Rutgers University Career Services staff, after which you will receive a certificate from Rutgers University and the New Start Career Network. Upcoming orientation and training sessions are scheduled for the following dates:
  • August 4, 2017
We also ask that coaches attend a basic workshop, conducted virtually, on mental health issues, provided by the Mental Health Association in New Jersey (MHANJ). Because individuals struggling with long-term unemployment are often also struggling with depression, stress, and related issues, the New Start Career Network has teamed with MHANJ to offer this training to volunteer career coaches so that they are better prepared to recognize when referrals to mental health professional are needed and what resources are available.
