Resume and Cover Letter Assistance

The first point of contact between you and a potential employer is often your resume and cover letter, making these two documents important elements of your job search. NSCN has compiled some resume tips that you may want to consider

For those who want help, the NSCN is also providing access for NSCN members to a suite of services through Optimal Resume, a web-based system that allows job seekers to create an account where they can craft multiple versions of resumes, and employment-related letters (cover letters, thank you notes, follow-up letters, etc.). Some of the resume and cover letter features include:
  • resume and employment letter samples organized by experience level (i.e. entry, mid-career, experienced) and by industry or occupation;
  • a wide range of  format and styles to choose from;
  • lists of “action words” and industry-specific terms  to add impact to your resume and employment letters; and
  • resume and letter “cloning” so you can tweak or customize these documents for different  jobs –with no limit on the number of resumes and letters you can create and save.
You can also use Optimal’s Video Resume module, which allows users to  create, rehearse, and record video resumes, introductions, and pitches. (Optimal Resume also has tools for creating portfolios and for practicing interviewing.)

Anything you create through Optimal Resume can be shared with a NSCN volunteer career coach through the system or downloaded and shared with other individuals for review.

Optimal Resume has help features throughout its applications, which include video tutorials for how to use each application, live and recorded webinars, a PDF user guide, and a help button.

Some of our partners’ websites have other tools and advice on resumes, such as AARP’s Back to Work 50+, and their Work & Jobs site.  Visit Our Resources page for additional information.
