Volunteer Opportunities

You may be thinking that you cannot afford to volunteer somewhere for free while you’re unemployed since that will take time away from your job search.

In reality though, volunteering can be a significant job search strategy. In a recent study from the Corporation for National and Community Service, researchers determined that volunteers have a 27 percent higher probability of finding a job after being unemployed than non-volunteers. Further, the study found that volunteering is associated with a higher probability of finding a job for all volunteers, irrespective of gender, race, geographical area, job market conditions, or age. Volunteering gives you the chance to brush up on skills or even gain new skills.  It is an opportunity to network with others, which can be a useful tool for finding a job.  Volunteering also allows you to fill the employment gaps on your resume.

Fortunately, there are plenty of resources for volunteering throughout New Jersey. You can visit the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism, which we cooperate with, for an in-depth list of volunteer organizations across the state, and where you can sign up for opportunities based on your interest.

Several of our strategic partner organizations can also help you connect with volunteer opportunities, such as the United Way of Northern New Jersey. At Goodwill Industries International you can search for volunteer positions that are either in person or virtual. There are also volunteer opportunities through the Corporation for National and Community Service, in particular the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs, both of which come with modest stipends.

We are also providing a list of volunteer organizations by county here for your convenience. [drop down list]
