NSCN Member Success Story: Bernie

How working with a career coach helped Bernie find employment

Like so many other unemployed New Jersey residents, Bernie had spent months searching for a job. He saw an article in a local newspaper and investigated a link that led him to the New Start Career Network (NSCN). Once he joined NSCN, he was paired with a Volunteer Career Coach, who helped him immensely. Bernie’s coach worked with him to prepare his résumé, as he had worked for the same employer for 32 years, and also provided strategies to prepare him for interviews. Through his own networking and with the help of his NSCN coach, he was able to secure a position as a quality control specialist.

“My first job seeker mastered this stepwise process by keeping an open mind, working diligently in his research, practicing for his interviews, and building relationships with his hiring managers and new colleagues,” Bernie’s coach said of her experience with him. “His persistence created this successful outcome.”

Bernie involved himself in many of the activities NSCN has to offer such as reading the weekly newsletters, attending the information seminars and workshops, and utilizing the website. He believes NSCN is a great program and commends the staff for the outstanding job they do to help individuals find employment. He offers the following advice to fellow NSCN members: “Use all the resources provided by NSCN and see which one works best for you. I was hesitant about asking to be assigned a career coach in the beginning but it was the best decision I ever made. I am employed today because of my career coach.”
