NSCN Member Success Story: Q & A with Amelia
Learn how working one-on-one with an NSCN Volunteer Career Coach as well as participating in NSCN Support Groups helped Amelia land a new position.
My new position is Senior Accountant (Fixed Assets) with NJ Transit.
- Is this new job in a different occupation or industry for you? If so, how did you position yourself to make the change?
I previously worked in the transportation industry. I also worked the same job in the media industry.
- What type of career/job did you have before you were unemployed?
I worked in accounts payable/accounts receivable for a small family business.
- How long were you unemployed before finding a new job?
This was my second stint with NSCN. This time I was unemployed for about 5 months. Prior to that it was almost two years.
- What was most challenging about your job search?
I am a caregiver to an elderly parent at the Jersey Shore, where there are fewer job opportunities. I also feel at this stage of my life it was more difficult because of age.
- What strategies or tools helped you get this job (online tools, personal contacts, job fairs, etc.)
I applied for this job twice; first in April and then again when it was reposted in late June.
NJ Transit was also present at the NSCN job fair on June 5, 2019. I did hand my resume to the representative at this event.
- How did you learn about the New Start Career Network (NSCN)?
It was from the Ready to Work s program through the NJ community colleges.
- In what ways did NSCN assist you in your search?
Countless ways! I participated in the Bill’s Transition Group, the Resilience Circle with Mike, John, and Don, and individual coaching with Charity! I also attended the job fairs and Michele’s webinars.
- How did working with a NSCN Career Coach help you professionally and/or personally?
The talented and inspiring coaches of NSCN listened and guided me in the right direction.
I saw this quote on Facebook: “Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.”
- What advice would you give to other NSCN members?
As Coach John said during the Resilience Circle meeting, “Don’t leave any stone unturned!”
- What recommendations would you make to NSCN to better help job seekers?
I have no recommendations because the program is great! A million thanks!!
