NSCN Member Success Story: Q & A with Ken

Read this Q & A to see how Ken positioned himself for a new occupation in a new industry.

What is your new job?
I am a Fulfillment Center Associate at Amazon at the new location in Cranbury, N.J. It opened 8/27 and I started 9/11. I have been certified to operate the Reach Truck, a forklift that allows for stowing pallets 0-50 feet up in the racks. This is the toughest truck to get certified to operate and is what I was hoping would be my assignment, though you get no true input as to where you will be assigned.
Is this new job in a different occupation or industry for you? If so, how did you position yourself to make the change?
This is a new occupation/industry for me. I was able to cite some previous experience with warehouse work and driving a forklift. To further present myself for this job and not exclude myself from a lower salary position, I also stated that my income needs were not what they once were.
What type of career/job did you have before you were unemployed?
I was in pharmaceutical market research for 11 years, working for market research firms. I was in project management, which involved coordinating the work of vendors, programmers, the pharmaceutical companies (client), and myself as a field coordinator, as well as running the study and keeping an eye on its progress, addressing issues if quotas were not filling at desired rate.
How long were you unemployed before finding a new job?
I was looking for work for nine months.
What was most challenging about your job search?
Finding positions that I felt were a good fit for me based on requirements and what I bring to the table was a challenge.
What strategies or tools helped you get this job?
I believe it was a notification email from a job website that first alerted me to the new location of Amazon close to where I live and opened me up to considering the position as a way to keep income flowing since unemployment was ending.
How did you learn about the New Start Career Network (NSCN)?
PSG of Mercer County made mention of it and then in the week I signed up, Maria Heidkamp was the speaker at the PSG of Mercer County’s weekly meeting.
In what ways did NSCN assist you in your job search?
I used Vault to read about Amazon and other companies offering prospective opportunities. My volunteer career coach gave a lot of helpful advice, and it was nice to bounce ideas/thoughts/feeling off her and get feedback.

Ken's Coach Added:

"Ken's success in finding employment is rooted in two admirable traits: He was confident in his wide range of professional and life skills. He nurtured that confidence by attending online and in-person motivational events. Equally important was his courage to step outside that box and take a risk on a different path forward."
